Joining the ranks of scattered other online 4K content providers, BitTorrent now provides its subscribers with Access to ultra HD video downloads.
Clients of BitTorrent’s “Bundle” service can now go ahead and access 4K UHD programming that has been supplied to the provider by movie studio Mance Media.
Of course, the selection on offer is still quite small but it is at least a start. So far, the four shows being offered include “The Toy Soldiers”, “Dragons: Real Myths and Unreal Creatures”, and “Circles of Life: Iceland”. However, at least all four shows were actually shot in native 4K resolution so they should scale perfectly with the ultra HD PC and TV screens that get used to view them.
The 90 minute programs have been compressed down dramatically from their native raw file sizes of roughly 300 GB to a much more manageable 3GB and the entertainment sound that accompanies them is being offered in 5.1 Surround Sound.
Each of these four initial shows are being made available worldwide to “Bundle” subscribers for a cost of just $5 to $6 per rental and can be watched by any 4K TV or PC monitor/PC with VLC Media player installed on it.
4K PCs can also be used to enjoy BitTorrents new 4K content. Netflix and Amazon don’t yet offer this
BitTorrent’s own Bundle has also already been used to release other programming at less but still above-Full HD resolutions. A notable recent example was Madonna’s secret project revolution, which was downloaded just under 2 million times by fans at a 2K resolution of 2048 × 1556.
With this new 4K bonus service, BitTorrent is not only creating potential competition for the likes of other 4K video and movie providers like Netflix, UltraFlix and Amazon Prime, it’s also starting off on a very good footing by making its UHD shows as widely and easily available as possible in a way that increases consumer convenience.
Unlike BitTorrent, both Amazon and Netflix limit the scope of their service in several ways: Both only allow their ultra HD programming to be played on 4K TVs that fit a specific set of connectivity conditions that include having HEVC decoding and HDCP 2.2 content protection and Amazon also imposes stricter geographical limitations by currently only allowing streaming of its content in the United States, unlike BitTorrent’s worldwide reach or Netflix’s of some 37 countries.
The only thing missing now is a wider selection of content. If BitTorrent can achieve this, it could really ramp up the quality of its own 4K service.

If you are into illegally downloading movies then you'll be pleased to know it appears that AACS 2.0 may have been cracked and the first 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray movie has been leaked online. Torrentfreak is reporting that torrent community UltraHDClub has taken full credit for cracking AACS 2.0 and uploading the first pirated 4K Ultra HD movie. If you are part of the distribution arm of Disney, Warner Brothers or Sony or AACS founding investors Microsoft, Panasonic, Toshiba or Intel then this news probably grinds your suspenders.
AACS 2.0 (Advanced Access Content System) is a security protection for optical discs that is supposed to prevent this kind of thing. It was really only a matter of time before it was (possibly) cracked. Torrentfreak has also confirmed that the upload was legit and is a straight up copy of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc. If you haven't watched anything in 4K Ultra UD, then this probably means nothing to you. If you watch all your torrented movies on your tablet or laptop in a coffee shop, then for now, you are unimpressed. For two reasons.

The first reason is that this is a massive file. I haven't confirmed the file for myself for this and the second reason (also downloading it would be illegal and I'm not getting pinched for this film, no way). The file is 53.30 GB. Torrent files for top-tier movies at a pretty solid audio/video quality usually cap out around 9 GB (compression rates and version qualities vary in size), with the right compression creating files as small as ~750 MB for totally watchable 720p resolution movies. So downloading a 53.30 GB file to port to your 4K TV seems like a bit of overkill.
Second, the file name is 'The Smurfs 2 (2013) 2160p UHD Blu-ray HEVC Atmos 7.1-THRONE.' That does not imply that this movie is anything else than the blue-stained squealing tire fire that is Smurfs 2. So not only would you have to download this amalgamation of wildly disturbing Smurf animation and acting worthy of every adult in any movie about a talking baby, you'd then have to be willing to seed it.

To be clear to those admonishing online piracy and gasping at the possibility that AACS 2.0 was actually cracked, just because a 4k Ultra HD Blu-Ray copy of a painfully terrible movie from four years ago has surfaced online doesn't directly imply that. We'll have to wait and see if this isn't a fluke, which means either more 4K UHD movies will start appearing on torrent sites or they won't. It's worth noting the Reddit comments in r/piracy seem to agree with AACS 2.0 being cracked, even though there didn't seem to be anything that addressed the choice of movie.

Whether this will lead to suddenly seeing all 4K Ultra HD on torrenting sites is yet to be determined. I'm sure compression rate will improve over time (as it's wont to do) and file sizes will decrease. I'm not sure if we'll see a response from the AACS partner companies, as acknowledging AACS 2.0 has been cracked might be worse than it actually having been cracked. Frankly, the Smurfs 2 decision leads to think this was either a fluke, or a beta test. Either way, I wouldn't touch that file through a stranger's VPN.
